Atenolol is used to treat a number of heart-related conditions. Some of them are high blood pressure, angina and reduction heart attack risks. Atenolol has been found to decrease the recurrence of heart attack in people who have suffered from it. It also reduces the risk of death in such people.
People who have suffered from an attack once are most susceptible to it. However, when a heart attack comes the second or third time, people usually die from it. The weakened condition of the heart cannot take another massive attack.
In people with high blood pressure, atenolol reduced or lowered the blood pressure. It works by decreasing the adrenalin stimulation on the nerves. The drug has been found to effectively reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure. It does not cure blood pressure problems but is effective in its treatment.
Atenolol is used in treating a heart disease called angina. The drug regulates the blood flow to the heart and also reduces the chest pain in the condition. People, who have angina, suffer from inadequate blood flow to the heart. The drug has helped to reduce the symptoms of angina in several patients. However, there are no indications that it cures the condition. That would probably require a surgery. Heart needs high quality blood to function properly and it cannot work efficiently with less oxygen. Unless this is regulated, conditions like angina cannot be cured. However, drugs like atenolol are effective in reducing the stress and load on the heart.
