Infants are prone to yeast infections just like adults. The problem with infants getting yeast infections is that it is very difficult to distinguish between a yeast attack and a diaper rash. Both look similar and quite often, parents end up neglecting the rashes without giving it too much importance. This will only aggravate the condition further.
If you have experienced yeast infection during your pregnancy, your baby is most likely to suffer from the same. Therefore, if you notice redness or rashness in the diaper area, it is high time you consult a doctor and diagnose the condition. So how do you exactly find out the difference between a diaper rash and yeast infections? Read on to find out more.
Generally, if the baby appears to be highly irritated and is constantly hungry, it is time you gave it a second thought. Blood while passing stools, a stomach upset, redness, itching and dryness around the diaper area are common symptoms of yeast infection in infants. This can also occur due to improper cleaning practices. Not maintaining clean and hygienic conditions, not allowing the diaper area to dry up completely and failing to clean the area properly can also lead to yeast infections. Moist and unhygienic conditions are perfect for yeasts to grow and multiply.
The infant might also suffer from oral thrush, where the yeast affects the insides of the mouth. This can occur if your baby has a habit of sucking your fingers.
You can consult a doctor and apply topical ointments to cure the infection. Maintaining clean and hygienic conditions also play a crucial role in preventing the spread of the disease.
