Eruptive Xanthomas Treatment

Eruptive xanthomas are lesions that form on the skin or in the fatty tissue that are situated directly under the surface of the skin. Usually these lesions develop due to fat collects in the immune cells located in the skin. Xanthomas can develop on any part of the body, and the best way to treat is either through surgery or using a laser.

In a surgery, the eruptive xanthomas are cut out of the skin and then the operated part is allowed to heal. The person will be put on antibiotics to prevent any infection. In laser method of eruptive xanthomas treatment, a laser is used to heat the cells where the lesion is present. The heat causes the cells to rupture. Usually a person requires more than one sitting, but results are noticeable after a single sitting. The xanthomas will shrink in size and then completely disappear.

There are several kinds of laser treatments that are not used for treating eruptive xanthomas. However, the most effective laser treatments are using the ultra-pulsed carbon dioxide laser treatment, argon laser treatment and ER YAG laser treatment.

Lasers are preferred method of treating xanthomas as they tend to get rid of the cells that are damaged. Also, this method helps to enhance the texture of the skin. This is not the case with surgical removal of the lesions as the skin gets scarred. However, immediately after a laser treatment, the skin will red and slightly swollen. But, it will heal in a few days, and the new skin that is formed will be smoother and of better texture.

As eruptive xanthomas tend to form on skin that is delicate like the skin of the eyelid or the skin of the brow, laser treatment is preferred as the treatment is targeted at that particular area and hardly has any dangers or side effects.
