Many people who get a growth on the skin wonder they have warts. In order to figure this out, one first has to know what do warts look like. Basically there is a lot of false information floating around about warts as many people believe that pimples and blisters are also warts.
However, warts are not associated with pimples or blisters. Rather they are a type of tumors on the skin that are not malignant. Usually warts are caused due to viral infection of the skin. There are numerous viruses that live on our skin and sometimes, these viruses cause the skin cells to multiply, and as a result warts are formed. Warts are invariably caused by the humanpapillomavirus, or the HPV. There are many different strains of this virus and based on the strain the warts get their appearance.
In general, warts have an appearance of a cauliflower like outgrowth, or they can be hard with a smooth surface. Usually in places where the skin is thin, the warts grown in the shape of narrow and small columns; and on thick skin, the warts tend to fuse together. Sometimes, you will find warts that have a black spot in the center. These spots are nothing but blood vessels that have managed to find their way into the warts and have clotted.
Warts tend to grow superficially and are restricted to the dermal layer of the skin. This is the second layer present in the skin after the epidermis. Also, since a virus causes the formation of warts, they can be contagious, and some strains of virus causing warts can also lead to cancer of the cervix in women.
