Plantar warts are usually big in size and are ugly to have in places where they can be seen. Laser treatment for plantar warts is considered when all other wart treatments have failed. Sometimes when the warts are large and widespread, it becomes very difficult to treat them. Through laser treatment, an intense beam of light is aimed at the wart and it is destroyed. A local anesthetic is given to administer the procedure. Different types of lasers are used for the procedure, like pulsed dye lasers and carbon dioxide lasers.
Pulsed dye laser aims the blood vessels within the wart. They target the hemoglobin which carries oxygen into the cells. The heat coming from the light freezes the blood vessels and cuts the supply of nutrients to the wart. The wart dies and dries up after which it falls off. It is considered to be an effective form of treatment. In a study, the success rate of removal of the wart was estimated to be 79 percent.
The carbon dioxide laser works by sending out a concentrated vapor that affects the tissue and research shows that it is highly effective. Even in one sitting the warts are completely removed. The European Journal of Pediatric Surgery published their report on the research done on 40 patients. For these patients the previous treatments had proven to be unsuccessful. But when this method was tried, the success rate was 100 percent. Within one session most of the patients showed improvement and the healing time was also 4 to 5 weeks only. After the procedure the rate of recurrence of warts was zero. None of the patients complained about post operative pain either.
Laser surgery is commonly undertaken for genital and plantar warts. They are actually expensive procedures and the pain could last for several days after treatment. They should not be taken lightly by people. Some people depending on their body constituency take a longer period for recovery. People who expect to get overnight remedy for their warts should consider this treatment after much thought.
Some other methods of wart removal like freezing and using acid also seem to be powerful and effective. They may not work for the first time, but after repeated use they prove to be effective. Along with the above consequences, there is a slight chance of infection with laser treatment. The positive side of laser therapy is that it is highly effective and it does not leave any scars on the treated area.
