Genital warts form due an infection caused by a virus. The virus is Human papillomavirus, or HPV. Although there are numerous strains of the virus, strains 6 and 11 are to blame for nearly ninety percent of infections. Women who get genital warts are more at a greater risk of getting cancer of the cervix. However, there is a vaccine available for genital warts that prevents infection from HPV strains 6, 11, 16 and 18.

If you are suffering from genital warts, there are different methods and procedures to get rid of them. Here are some effective measures that will give you information on how to get rid of genital warts.

One suggested way to get rid of genital warts is by applying ointments on the affected areas. These ointments are prescribed by the doctor, and the most common ones are podofilox, imiquimod and trichloroacetic acid. In case you are pregnant, you should not use any ointment as it can lead to birth defects in the baby.

Surgery is another method to get rid of genital warts. There are many different kinds of surgical procedures used. They are cryosurgery, laser surgery and electrocautery. In laser surgery, a laser beam is used to remove the warts. While cryosurgery freezes the warts with the help of liquid nitrogen, so that they fall off. And, electrocautery involves burning off the warts.

Finally, the last method to get rid of genital warts is taking an anti viral injection. Usually the drug used is Interferon alfa. However, this method has received mixed reviews as it is not always successful in getting rid of the HPV virus, and the person may have to take another dose. Also, the anti viral is rather costly and may not suit everyone's purse.
