Anyone can get warts at any time in their lives. Usually warts are thickening of the skin and are invariably caused by a virus known as Humanpapillomavirus. The good news is that usually warts are not malignant, but there are some types that can turn malignant, namely types 16 and 18.

Here are some of the different types of warts that can occur on the body:

• Common warts usually develop among children. These warts can be transmitted from one person to another by touch. They form thickened papules on the skin and are quite rough to touch. Usually the warts form around the knees, elbow and on the hands.
• Plantar warts tend to develop on the feet. Actually they develop on the soles of the feet, and that is why they are often mistaken for corns or calluses. However, one distinguishing feature of plantar warts is that they have a black center, which is formed on account of the blood vessels clotting. Unlike other types of warts, these warts spread under the skin and can cause discomfort when pressure or weight is exerted on them.
• Genital warts are caused due to the HPV virus, and they are deemed as a sexually transmitted disease. They form in and around the vagina or in the cervix where women are concerned; while men can get them on the penis, scrotum, groins, anus or thighs. These warts can cause cervical cancer in women, and cancer of the penis or anus in men. The warts are usually flesh colored, and hence, they are often not noticed. They can be stand alone warts or form clusters that have a cauliflower-like appearance.
• Flat warts are more prevalent among women than men. They are small and have the tendency to spread. As the name suggests, these warts are flat. They can be either skin colored or brown in color.
