Are Plantars Warts Contagious ?

Plantar warts are caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV, on the outer layers of the skin or on the sole of the feet.  There are many types of HPV and only a few types have been identified to cause warts on the feet. The other types of HPV cause warts elsewhere in the body. HPV is contagious if you come in direct contact with it.

Every person has a different resistance to HPV. Not everybody will get infected with it by coming in contact. Even people belonging to the same family could react differently to the virus. The HPV strains are not very contagious. So, they are not transmitted easily from one person to another. HPV virus needs warm and moist environment like showers and lawns to spread. By walking barefoot in gym or swimming pools, you may contract the virus.

However, for the virus to infect it needs an entry point. Cracks on your skin or cuts and scrapes, and tender skin areas can get infected.

Multiple warts appear if the virus has infected more than one place. The virus spreads from the original place of infection. There are different types of multiple warts a person can get. Some of them are,

These warts spread through common public areas like swimming pools, showers, toilets and such places. You can even get them from the bathroom shower of your home. An epidemic of warts is rare but it can occur through gyms and pools where a, lot of people share one common facility. Most people build immunity to warts as they get older.

Plantar warts are more common in children than adults. However, people who have a poor immunity, such as HIV/AIDS patients, get them more frequently. These warts do not require treatment and most of them disappear on their own. In case they cause pain, swelling or seem to be spreading too much, treatment is required. Such warts are surgically removed by the doctor. Warts can be removed surgically if they are too big and are uncomfortable for the person.
