Skin is the largest organ in our body. It forms the most important barrier and protects the underlying sensitive nerves, muscles, organs from deadly microorganisms. It is prone to rashes, injuries and other types of infections and disorders.
Vitiligo is a condition where there is profuse de-pigmentation of skin leading to the formation of white spots, which look distinctly prominent on the body. This disease affects nearly one to two percent of the world’s population.
The causes for the occurrence of vitiligo are yet to be established. Although there are different remedies, to prevent the skin from becoming completely de-pigmented, the exact cause for loss in activity of melanocytes (which produce melanin that is responsible for pigmentation) is yet to be discovered and understood.
People suffering from autoimmune diseases like hyperthyroidism (over activity of thyroid glands), pernicious anemia (failure to absorb Vitamin B12), alopecia areata (a hereditary disorder where there is loss of hair), and adrenocortical insufficiency are prone to vitiligo. Any disease that affects the immune system has a direct effect on aggravating or initiating the disease condition.
It is known to be hereditary and can pass on for many generations. Initially, it will start as small patches appearing on the affected area and will soon spread to other parts of the body.
Eating fruits and vegetables, avoiding spicy foods and junk can reduce the severity of the condition. Skin grafting, Psoralen, Ultraviolet A therapy, corticosteroid creams, depigmentation of skin, laser treatment, etc. are some of the treatments that can be administered to the patient.
