Vitamin D is an important vitamin for the body as its helps in the formation of bones, mineralization of the bones. Basically, to have a healthy bone structure, you require Vitamin D. The vitamin is also important for regulating the hormones released by the parathyroid gland. These hormones help in maintaining the level of calcium in the body and ensuring that the nervous system and the muscles of the body work properly.
The vitamin is also important for maintaining the immune system of the body. Usually we get Vitamin D from the rays of the sun and from eating certain foods that are rich source of the vitamin. People who work indoors constantly or live in places where the sun hardly shines are prone to Vitamin D deficiency. However, certain races are predisposed to the deficiency.

If you suffer from fractures rather frequently or suffer from bones that are turning soft or experience pain the bone, then you definitely have a lack of Vitamin D. Other symptoms include suffering aches and pains in the muscles and experiencing weakness in the muscles. Also, if all of a sudden you have a weak immune system, you could be having a lack of the vitamin. In seniors, problems with the thinking process or suffering from depression is a sign of Vitamin D deficiency. While in children, suffering from severe asthma or having a stunted growth is a sign of deficiency of the vitamin.
