What Helps Varicose Veins ?

Varicose veins are a condition where the veins swell and cause pressure. Varicose veins can be a very painful condition, leading to other serious problems. The blood gets stuck in the vein and causes discoloration on the skin. A person with this condition notices blue and purple veins. Treatment or varicose veins include relieving the symptoms such as pain and also improving the appearance of the clustered vein.

There are several ways through which a person can avoid varicose veins.

Exercise often helps to improve the symptoms of varicose veins. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, exercises such as waling increase mobility in the body and decrease the swelling in the veins by restoring blood circulation. It also slows down the development of varicose veins.

An overweight or an obese person is prone to varicose veins. Losing weight can help because it takes of the pressure from the veins and also improves blood flow. Water retention is another factor that causes this condition. Drinking plenty of water and going on a low salt diet can help the condition, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Clothing also plays a role in aggravating the symptoms of varicose veins sometimes. Do not wear high heels and concentrate on wearing comfortable footwear. Flat shoes improve the blood circulation from the feet to the upper part of the body. Do not wear tight clothes like jeans that constrict the crotch or are tight on the lower part of the body. This can restrict the blood from flowing freely.

Sitting or standing for too long can debilitate your condition when you have varicose veins. After 30 minutes in the same position, change it and try to take short breaks for exercise. Also, avoid sitting with crossed legs and stay in the same position for long hours.

The National Heart and Lung Institute recommends that you keep your feet in an elevated position while resting. It promotes the blood flow to the heart.

There are several support stockings available and they help to increase blood flow from feet to heart. The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute say that support stockings apply pressure to the leg and help in preventing varicose veins. The swelling in the leg is further reduced.

For chronic problem with varicose veins, surgery is suggested. However, it is mainly dependent on the size of the blockade and the location of the varicose veins. The surgery helps to move the veins or close them so that blockades do not occur.

They claim that varicose veins develop due to defective valves in the veins. Under normal circumstances, the valves stop the blood from flowing backwards, but in when the valves are defective, this does not happen. And, as a result blood flows in the opposite direction and this leads to varicose veins. More..
