Can Back Problems Cause Varicose Veins ?

There are several theories about the cause of varicose veins, but all theories have one thing in common. They claim that varicose veins develop due to defective valves in the veins. Under normal circumstances, the valves stop the blood from flowing backwards, but in when the valves are defective, this does not happen. And, as a result blood flows in the opposite direction and this leads to varicose veins.

One of the reasons for varicose veins is exertion of pressure on the veins. So, if a person has back problems that result in pressure on the veins that lie superficially, it can result in varicose veins. While no record is available whether back problems cause varicose veins, it is safe to say that when pressure is put on veins and it affects the flow of blood, it will result in the develop of varicosities. So, if a person is suffering from a back problem and this problem puts pressure on the veins or pressure on muscles that surround deep seated veins, it will result in varicose veins.

Veins are responsible for taking back deoxygenated blood to the heart and lungs for oxygenation. When these veins become thick or enlarged, they are referred to as varicose veins. Usually, the veins on the thighs and legs are affects, but this condition can develop in any part of the body. At times, a person can be predisposed to varicose veins due to genetics and in such a person, the varicosities will be more prominent with age.

It is estimated that in the US around thirty-six percent women and nineteen percent men suffer from varicose veins. How many of them have back problems is anyone's guess. Besides back problems, there are several other factors that may trigger varicose veins. For instance, pregnant women often get this condition. This is primarily because the volume of blood increases during pregnancy and along with it, the growing fetus puts pressure on the veins. In addition, during pregnancy, hormones such as progesterone and estrogen relax the walls of the veins which also causes varicosity. Other factors include obesity, standing for prolong period of time, constipation, prostate, chronic cough, or straining to pass stools.

If you think your varicose veins are caused due to a back problem, it is best to consult a doctor. However, you can also raise your legs while being seated, and if you have to sit for long periods of time, try to take a break and walk around. Also, do some stretching exercises during the break. This will not only help flow of blood, it will also ease your back muscles. If you are wearing a compression garment for your back, try also wearing compression stockings for your legs. Use the stockings the moment you wake up, and this will prevent the veins from swelling up. Many times, back problems and varicose veins are caused due to obesity. So, if you are overweight, then make sure that you exercise regularly to get rid of the excess pounds. Also, begin eating healthily to attain good body mass index. Try to eat more vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean meats, and cut down on saturated fats, alcohol, junk food, salt.

When you are sitting, avoid crossing your legs. This can obstruct the flow of blood. Also, do not wear tight clothing. Instead opt for loose and comfortable clothes that do not restrict your movement.

If you cannot do exercise due to your back problem, try walking to and from work to get blood flowing through your veins. Also, if you are suffering from chronic constipation, consult a doctor on how to relieve it. Chronic constipation can lead to varicose veins due to the straining. It can also lead to hemorrhoids, which are a type of varicose veins.
