What Are The Symptoms Of A Urinary Tract Infection ?
Urinary tract infections produce several signs and symptoms and they may vary according to the age, sex and the place of infection. Some people do not show any symptoms of an infection for several days. The most common ones are frequent urination and pain or burning while urinating.
The symptoms of urinary tract infection can show up immediately or later. Some of them are as follows:
- You may feel the urge to pass urine frequently even after the bladder has been emptied recently.
- You may experience pain or a burning sensation while urinating. If you have only this symptom then you probably have the infection in urethra and are called urethritis.
- Some people feel discomfort and pressure in the lower part of the abdomen.
- You can also experience pain in the pelvic area or the back.
- The urine may contain blood, will have a strong smell and cloudy appearance. This is called pyuria and is characterized by a high count of white blood cells in the urine. This confirms the presence of urinary tract infection.
- Sometimes you can also get fever.
- Sometimes urinary tract infection is a result of some other primary infection like pyelonephritis. It is a kidney infection. Some of the symptoms are
- A urinary tract infection that is present for more than a week. Diabetic patients have high chances of suffering from a silent urinary tract infection for several weeks.
- An increased frequency of urination during the nights.
- Chills and constant fever
- Vomiting and nausea
- Pain in the abdomen
Urinary tract infections also occur in newborn babies and toddlers. It can be more serious in children if it is not treated immediately. They also involve the kidneys in children. If toddlers and infants get urinary tract infection, these are the symptoms that you should watch out for:
- A high fever without any known causes will be present. Infants will be inactive and do not feed properly.
- Babies cry when they pass urine and this indicates pain and also the urine will be foul smelling.
- The urine will be cloudy.

Urinary tract infections show fewer symptoms in seniors but is characterized by the need for frequent urination. They may experience fever like symptoms like chills and tenderness. However, seniors may not complain of pain in case of a UTI. They may experience confusion and mental changes while having the infection.
