Healthy Diet For Chronic Urinary Tract Infection

The urinary tract consists of the kidneys, bladder, urethra and the ureters. Any part of the tract can get infected resulting in urinary tract infection. However, the urethra and bladder are most prone to infection. While both genders can get urinary tract infections, it is more widespread among women. Also, there are some people who are prone to constant infections of the urinary tract. In such people, the infection is chronic. While there are treatments available for chronic urinary tract infection, sticking to healthy diet can provide relief from the symptoms.

The most common symptom of a chronic urinary tract infection is the desire to urinate repeatedly. Along with this, the person will experience a burning sensation at the time of urinating and also the quantity of urine passed will be small. In some people, the urine can be malodorous and have a cloudy color. If the person is a woman, she will experience pain in the pelvic region, while a man will experience pain in the rectal region. Urinary tract infections should never be ignored, as they can spread to other neighboring organs.

Usually, the doctor will prescribe antibiotics to tackle the infection. However, long-term use of antibiotics is not good, as the body can get resistant to the medication. So, while the treatment for chronic urinary tract infection is taking a longer course of medication, the doctor will also suggest changes in the diet to ensure that the person recovers from the infection.

People with chronic urinary tract infection should be looking to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. They should concentrate on citrus fruits, such as oranges, tangerines and mandarins, due to their Vitamin C content. This vitamin stems the proliferation of bacteria in making the environment inside the urinary tract more acidic. In addition, consuming natural yogurt helps in increasing the beneficial flora in the urinary tract. It also helps to ease the pain.

As per the American Dietetic Association, a person suffering from chronic urinary tract infection should increase their water intake. They should also try and drink a lot of cranberry juice, as this juice stops the bacteria from hanging to the lining of the urinary tract. In addition, cranberry juice helps to relieve the desire to urinate often. In Eastern cultures, barley water and raw coconut water is recommended for urinary tract infection. You can soak barley pearls and then boil them to get barley water. And, you can get raw coconut from the market and drink that. Both tend to help in relieving the infection and the desire of frequent urination.

Having a healthy diet for chronic urinary tract infection also means refraining from foods that can aggravate the condition. Hence, avoid consuming alcohol, carbonated drinks, caffeinated drinks, processed sugar, fats, chocolates and spicy food. It has been seen that the symptoms can worsen with these foods in some people.
