What Causes Uremia ?

Kidneys play a crucial role in our well-being. They play a major role in purifying and cleansing our blood. They filter out the toxic waste from the blood stream and send back purified blood back to our circulatory system. They help to detoxify and maintain the overall health of our body. Any disease or disorder to the kidney can jeopardize the functioning of the entire body.

Kidney failure can lead to numerous medical conditions. Uremia is a disorder characterized by acute (sudden) or chronic (prolonged) kidney failure. A high protein diet, cancer, excessive use of drugs, surgery, trauma, and lifestyle changes can also cause uremia. Irrespective of the cause, an imbalance in breakdown of proteins leading to excess accumulation of urea (the final product of protein metabolism) is responsible for this disease. In kidney disorders, these organs fail to filter out excess urea from the blood. Toxic substances start circulating in the body. Weakness, sore throat, delirium, headache, vomiting, nausea and loss of appetite are common symptoms.

Any blockage in the urinary tract, which prevents the normal urination process, has to be rectified immediately. People suffering from urinary tract infections and diseases are also prone to uremia.

If left untreated for a prolonged period, it could turn out to be fatal. A kidney transplant or dialyses are some of the treatments administered to the patient. These measures have to be complemented with a strict diet plan. Restriction of protein and salt becomes necessary. Timely treatment and care is crucial for the patient’s survival.
