Causes Of Eye Ulcers

An eye ulcer develops on the epithelial layer of the cornea. It usually develops in people who tend to live in the tropics. However, it can also develop in people living in colder reaches. Also, it has been seen that eye ulcers can develop in farmers. This usually happens during harvesting when inadvertently the farmer gets some hay or grass into his eye, and the same causes irritation in the eye leading to an eye ulcer.

Children also can get eye ulcers. Usually this occurs due to a deficiency of Vitamin A. However, an eye ulcer is infectious, and if one eye develops an ulcer, then the probability is high that the other eye too will develop it. An ulcer in the eye can cause permanent blindness and that is why it is important to know the causes of eye ulcer as you can step to prevent the formation of the ulcers.

More often then not, one of the main causes of eye ulcers is trauma to the eyes. If a person wears contact lenses for a long period of time, or injures the eye due to some chemical, or develops an eye infection, it can lead to an ulcerin the eye. Other causes for eye ulcers include suffering from dry eye, having dystrophy of the cornea or distichiae. Even bacterial or fungal infections can lead to an eye ulcer. In fact, fungal infections like keratitis can cause the ulcer, and this ulcer can take a long time to heal.
