Typhoid Facts

Typhoid s a like threatening condition that is caused by bacteria called salmonella typhi. In the US, every year, at least four hundred cases of typhoid are diagnosed. This is pretty high. Many doctors believe that poor sanitation conditions are the leading cause of the disease. Also, when people travel internationally to endemic countries, they might get affected by typhoid.

There is no vaccination available for typhoid. All over the world typhoid affects nearly 13 million people. It is also one of the leading causes of deaths.

Typhoid is caused by eating contaminated food or drinking water. In places where flies are more, the presence of typhoid bacteria will also be high. Flies tend to sit on feces and they will carry the typhoid bacteria that way. People infected with typhoid pass out the bacteria in their stools. So, flies which sit on such feces pass it on to food and water by sitting on them.

Typhoid is more common in industrial areas and places were water gets contaminated easily. Even people who live in coastal areas are more susceptible to the disease. Typhoid is the biggest danger in the Indian subcontinent because the population is extremely high and the sanitation is poor in several parts of the country.

Typhoid causes a fever which can continue for an indefinite period of time. It mainly affects the bowels. The fever can continue for 14 days or even a month. It can cause shivering and severe body pains during the time period it lasts.
