Toxic Shock Syndrome, or TSS, is one such rare life threatening illness that results due to bacteria known as Staphylococcus aureus. It usually appears in women who use tampons during the menstrual cycles. It can however also affect people having skin infection or those who have had a recent surgery. TSS as it is commonly termed as medically must be treated immediately otherwise it can be fatal.
The first thing that is done in the treatment of TSS is to remove the source that is causing the production of toxins. In women having menstrual cycle and using tampons, at first the tampons are removed. When you suspect that you are having TSS due to the tampons you can remove it all by yourself before meeting the doctor. The toxins sometimes may occur as a result of nasal packing. Hence, those nasals packing causing TSS should also be immediately removed.
The infected areas causing TSS should be drained such as the abscesses may be required to be cleaned off to cut off the source of the infection. The doctor would be the best person to advice in such matter. Four antibiotics are prescribed by the doctors. Antibiotics like penicillin help in killing the bacteria that lead to toxic shock syndrome. Dehydration may occur in few affected patients. Hence, this should be stopped by administering the patient intravenous IV fluids. The lowered blood pressure which is one of the prime symptoms must be raised by giving necessary medicines like dopamine which can help in bringing the blood pressure to the normal levels.
