Ovarian teratomas are of different types. Understanding the exact type can really help in diagnosing and treatment of it. There are primarily three sub-types of it which are of more concern and interest.

The foremost example of ovarian teratoma is the mature cystic teratoma. These kinds of teratoma usually occur during the child bearing stage. This is one of the most common types of ovarian germ cell tumor. It is a type of cystic tumor that has a very thick outer portion sometimes developing into an embryonic tissue. These may include bones, hair, skin and even some parts of respiratory system. If at any point of time this tumor ruptures, then it may cause severe pain. This sub-type of ovarian teratoma is generally benign.

The second type is called monodermal teratoma. This is completely different from the previous type as it is composed of only one type of tissue. The presence of any other form of tissues can only be traced in a very minimal amount. It is generally seen in children and in young women. It can benign as well as malignant.

The third type is called immature teratoma. It is very much similar to cystic teratoma however it occurs mostly in children and in young women. All these teratomas have profound symptoms of unusual vaginal bleeding, alteration in the menstrual cycle, pain in the pelvic and lower abdomen areas.

To ascertain an ovarian teratoma, blood test is the initial step and then further tests are carried out to determine the kind of ovarian teratoma.
