What Is Syphilis ?

Syphilis is becoming increasingly common type of sexually transmitted diseases. It is dangerous disease to contract. Thought the symptoms landside effects of the disease may not mean much it has long term effects and keeps damaging a person’s body consistently. It can cause death also eventually to a person. It is caused by a bacterium called Treponema pallidum.

It is considered as a very dangerous illness by doctors, and when pregnant women get it, they transfer it to the new born though the placenta. However, it is a fatal illness for the new born. The baby may be still born or else they will dies within a few weeks of being born. It is very unfortunate if pregnant women get syphilis. Also, the most dangerous trait of the syphilis bacterium is that it alternates between lying dormant and being active. It progresses in different stages and it is very confusing for the infected person to know whether they have the infection or not.

First it appears and causes a sore and then the sore heals on its own. Even the second stage is somewhat similar and it is the third stage that is most detrimental by causing permanent damages to the human body.

Early diagnosis of syphilis infection can make a lot of difference in the cur and treatment of the infection. The treatment is extremely simple and the person is given a shot of penicillin. There may be other antibiotics also used for the treatment. However, it is very crucial that the injection be given in the primary stage of the infection. By the time the secondary stage ends, the disease would have advanced into third stage and it becomes almost impossible to treat it then.
