Syphilis is categorized as a sexually transmitted disease, and it is caused by bacteria called Treponema pallidum. This is a type of spirochete and is shaped like a corkscrew. It can be seen microscopically. Once infected by the bacteria, the incubation period takes from 9 days to three months.
The first signs and symptoms of the infections start appearing when the incubation period is complete. In most people, the symptoms start showing up after 21 days of the first contact. The syphilis infections progresses in stages. The first stages are when the first wound appears. It mainly appears on the genital area in places like the vagina, penis or the anus. It may also appear on the mouth depending on the place of contacts. This stage is known as the primary syphilis. The sore at this point measures only half an inch. However, some other symptoms are also seen, and include inflammation of the lymph nodes in the groin and it can hurt. During this time, the infected people may feel sick and in about four weeks time, the wound heals. However, the bacteria do not disappear from the body even at this point of time.
In secondary stage of syphilis, more rashes and sores start appearing on the genitals. By now it could have also spread to other parts of the body. The rash is reddish brown in color, and may look like a lesion. At this time, a person may have headaches and loss of appetite. This rash could last for a month or more.
