History Of Syphilis Treatment

Syphilis is a bacterial infection that is caused by the Treponema pallidum bacterium. It is a sexually transmitted disease. This particular bacterium has been dated to be thousands of years old. It could also have been a prehistoric one. The bacterium looks like a corkscrew and causes the infection called syphilis in people.

Syphilis is a very slowly progressing disease, and the infections that it causes, like open cuts and wounds, can take a long time to heal and be caused as well. In ancient and historic times, not much evidence has been found about the documentation of this bacterium. People seemed to have known about it, but they did not know how to treat it. There were incidents where people have died after a few ears of getting such an infection. Even today, there is no complete treatment available for syphilis because the bacteria can actually find a way to live in the human body. The symptoms of it are only treated and the bacteria present at the site of the open cuts is only killed and treated.

Syphilis was treated in a similar fashion during historic times. The cuts and wounds caused by it were treated effectively. However, there was no evidence of curing the disease itself. Also, in all probability, people may not have realized that the bacteria continue to live even if the cuts have been treated. This is one of the probable reason why there was no permanent cure found for the disease in ancient time.
