Dangers Of Syphilis

Syphilis is a bacterial infection that is caused by a bacterium called Treponema pallidum. It is a sexually transmitted disease. It is spread from one person to another only through sexual contact and exchange of fluids. When the infected sores come in contact with another person’s skin, the bacterium spreads directly. It can also spread through anal and oral sex.

It can cause sores and open wounds on the mouth. A syphilis infection has various stages and each stage exhibits different symptoms. The incubation period for the syphilis bacteria is about 3 weeks and it can take up to 3 months also for the symptoms to show up actually. The secondary symptoms of the disease exhibits more open wounds and cuts. The rashes can occur on the sole of the foot or inside the palm too.

The third stage of syphilis is a very dangerous stage. It can develop at anytime during the first three years of the infection. At this point, the bacteria would have infected the heart, skin, bones and also destructs important and vital organs like the liver and the brain. At the third stage, the brain gets affected severely, and one can develop memory related problems and also experience mood changes. It can also lead to dementia and the person may become dependant on nursing home care. Eventually if the bacteria continue to affect the person, it can lead to death early in life. However, how much a syphilis bacterium can affect a person depends a lot on their immune system also.
