Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease and it can occur during sex, anal or oral sex. The syphilis bacterium is passed from one person to another through direct contact. In the primary stage of the disease, an open sore occurs. During the secondary stage, more sores appear. The sores mainly develop on the genitals, and in the vagina, anus and rectum. Some of the sores can also develop in and around the mouth or on the lips.
The bacterium finds its way into the body through the mucous membranes only. A pregnant mother can pass on syphilis to her baby through the placenta. However, there is no other way of spreading this bacterium from one person to another.
The incubation period for the syphilis causing bacteria is anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months. The incubation period is basically the time taken from the first exposure to the time the symptoms start occurring. The presence of syphilis can only be determined through the presence of open sores in the body. A person is most contagious when they have these open sores in their body and they can spread to another person thorough sexual contact. However, there is no sure way of saying how long the syphilis bacteria stay in a person's body. A person can be contagious even after several years of the infection. The bacteria may still be present in their body and so, that is no sure shot way of saying that a person has been completely cured from the bacterial infection and will never get it again.
