A blood clot blocks the arteries and the blood vessels and as a result it leads to cerebro-vascular stroke. When the blood flow to the brain is obstructed, the brain is deprived of oxygen and nutrients and the nerve cells start dying fast. The effects of stroke depend on which side of the brain has been affected. The severity of the stroke plays a large role in the recovery of the patient. There are some common after effects of stroke that stroke patients go through.

Most of the stroke patients will be affected on a physical level. The after effects of the stroke may become less or diminish over time. People have lesser muscle coordination and loss of balance initially. They develop imbalance and conditions like claw or hammer toe according to the American Stroke Association. The neuromuscular imbalances are caused by the brain after a stroke and it increases the chances of falls in them. Stroke patients also find it difficult to chew and swallow and this increases the risk of choking. Once the patient recovers from a stroke, rehabilitation is normally recommended to them. This can be done as an inpatient or an outpatient service.

Stroke also affects the behavior and communication abilities of a person. They may experience mood swings more often and also develop short temper. Their cognitive and problem solving abilities decrease comparatively. The frustration develops because of the memory problems they experience. For such patients, behavioral and psychological therapies are recommended. Stroke also affects the speech which is called aphasia. They cannot talk properly, listen, write or read, according to the American Heart Association. Such patients may need speech therapy as a part of the recovery process.

A stroke can lead a patient to depression because of the altered chemical levels in the brain. Depression is, in fact, very common following a stroke. Stroke survivors have a lack of motivation because the recovery period for them is very long. After hospitalization everyone looks forward to getting on with their lives, but in the case of a stroke patient, this does not happen quickly or immediately after leaving the hospital. They feel dependent and also lose vigor for every day living. The doctors recommend treatment with a psychologist for stroke patients; and a physical therapist to make them independent and if possible, get back the movements they may have lost. Some antidepressants may be used in conjunction with the other medications. Depression is treatable for stroke patients, but they also need a lot of support and motivation from their family.
