Short Term Memory Loss In Stroke Patients

A short term memory loss is often confused with Alzheimer’s. A stroke patient has a high possibility of experiencing short term memory loss, which is also called vascular dementia. This type of memory loss is extremely debilitating. Short term memory loss is caused when the blood flow to the brain does not occur for some reason. The cortex is the region that controls learning, reasoning, speaking and remembering. When the cortex is not functioning properly, a person tends to have problems in all these areas. This can happen as a result of a massive stroke or several smaller strokes.

The smaller strokes or the mini strokes often go unnoticed by people because the symptoms are not clearly visible or felt. If the strokes continue to be untreated, they could lead to degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s at a later stage. These mini strokes are also known as transient ischemic strokes and they cause a temporary loss of blood flow to the cortex. The symptoms may exists temporarily and go away once the blood flow is restored. Usually, it is normal for people to ignore these warning signs and they do not seek a diagnosis. For some people, the stroke is diagnosed during an autopsy.

There are some other abilities that are hampered to due to short term memory loss. They are unable to make decisions even on simple things, lack of recognition as they may not identify simple objects, difficulty in remembering common words, remembering names and things and acknowledging. However, the doctor takes into account the condition of the stroke before diagnosing dementia.

There are many other observations made in the process of memory loss. The person has a slow body movement, slow thought process and also they have a very short attention span. All these symptoms are very difficult to differentiate from Alzheimer’s disease. In a complete stroke where paralysis is involved the effects of dementia goes unnoticed. The patient may not be aware of their state and the chances of misdiagnosis are very high. That is why patients are observed very carefully after a full stroke.

In such conditions, the prognosis or the diagnosis are not proper and is difficult. In some severe conditions of stroke medications for Alzheimer’s is used which further comes in the way of proper diagnosis. Because of the emergency of the situation there is very little that medical practitioners can do to improve the condition.

When the blood flow to the brain is obstructed, the brain is deprived of oxygen and nutrients and the nerve cells start dying fast. The effects of stroke depend on which side of the brain has been affected. The severity of the stroke plays a large role in the recovery of the patient. There are some common after effects of stroke that stroke patients go through.
