If you are wondering whether magnetic therapy can help stroke victims, the answer is yes. According to study conducted in the US, researchers found that using magnetic therapy to slow down the activity of the brain whether the stroke has not caused damage can help to enhance the motor function of the stroke victim. This particular technique to use magnetic field is referred to repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation or rTMS. According to the researchers, the benefits of this therapy last for around 2 weeks.
While the researchers claim that this particular magnetic therapy is beneficial for stroke victims, other clinical trials do not give clear evidence of the same. The Director of the Stroke Center at Duke University of Durham in North Carolina says that proper research and clinical studies have to be conducted about magnetic therapy before it can be conclusively said that magnetic therapy is beneficial for stroke victims. Also, researchers are still not sure how long the benefits last. As the study conducted was a small one, it just gave short-term results.
In a stroke, the left or right side of the brain goes through severe stress due to the lack of oxygen supply. The rTMS treatment is similar to constraint induced therapy. Even in a rehabilitation therapy, the unaffected part of the brain is restrained so that the affected part is forced to work more.
Other researchers are still investigating the uses of rTMS in treating various neurological conditions. According to one of the researchers, who was part of the study, a stroke victim would require several rTMS sessions in order for the benefits to be long-term.
A trial that was conducted on fifteen people who suffered from stroke discovered that the affected people got better 30 percent within 5 days of the treatment. However, this effect was observed just for two weeks. If the number of treatments were increased, the noticeable benefits of the treatment started increasing in a span of 2 or 3 days. This led the researchers to conclude the improvements in a stroke victim were possible if the number of treatments were enhanced.
The effects of rTMS fairly increased the motor skills after a stroke and they looked promising. However, long term studies are required to establish its credibility. If the treatment helps in improving quality of life of a stroke patient, then it could be the futuristic therapy. There are quite a few studies underway. There is one particular study being conducted at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta that many doctors, stroke victims and other researchers are waiting. If that research shows the long-term benefits of magnetic therapy for stroke victims, then there is hope for these victims to lead a relatively normal life.
