Treatment For Skin Rash Kids

Children are quite susceptible to rashes; possibly because they tend to spend a lot of time outdoors and are exposed to different rash-causing elements. However, most skin rashes in kids are not serious and can be easily treated without any complications. At the same time, if a skin rash on your kid is worrying you, be sure to consult a doctor to allay your worry.

Treatment for skin rash among kids depends on the type of rash that the kid has. Some of the common rashes that kids get are eczema, poison ivy rash, hives, scabies, ringworm and diaper rash. For each one, the treatment varies.

Eczema is quite common among children and tends to manifest in the form of scaly red rash that is quite itchy. This rash usually develops on the knees, wrists and elbows, and children suffering from hay fever, asthma or having a family history of eczema are more susceptible to it. One of the best ways to treat eczema is by putting steroidal creams on the rash. The itching can be controlled with the help of an oatmeal bath. Alternatively, the kid can also be given some Benadryl to soothe the itching. When a kid is suffering from eczema, it is important to moisturize the skin by bathing with a moisturizing soap and putting moisturizing lotion immediately after the bath.

Poison ivy rash is a problem during summer and leaves red patches, streaks or blisters where the plant touches the body. Usually, it takes around one to two days before the rash appears. It causes itching, which can be alleviated with calamine lotion, over the counter steroid creams or Benadryl. If the rash is spread over a large part of the body, it is best to consult a doctor.

Hives develop due to allergies and are not contagious at all. It can occur due to an allergic reaction to certain foods, medications, viral infections or insect bites. Hives occur in the form of pink sports that tend to itch. The best way to treat hives is with the help of Benadryl, as it alleviates the severe itching that children experience. However, if the child develops breathing problems, it is a medical emergency and he/she should be rushed to the emergency room.

Scabies are caused due to mites that burrow under the skin. The mites are transmitted from an infected person to an uninfected person via close contact or using clothes or bed sheet of the infected person. Scabies needs to be diagnosed by a doctor and requires proper medication to kill the mites. Usually, the cream prescribed for scabies has to be applied all over the body for around 8 to 12 hours to kill the mites and get relief from the intense itching. Thereafter, all the clothing, bed linen and towels of the infected child should be washed in hot water, so that mites in them are killed. This will prevent recurrence of the scabies rash after treatment.

Ringworm is a fungal infection and not a worm, as the name suggests. It can occur on any part of the body, including the scalp. Usually, the infection is passed through close contact with an infected child and results in lesions that are dry and scaly to look at. The lesions are itchy. As this rash is caused due to a fungus, it requires anti-fungal cream to eliminate the rash and the fungus. It takes around three to four weeks for the fungus to disappear completely. If the ringworm rash occurs on the scalp, the child will be prescribed oral anti-fungal medication and will have to take it for six to eight weeks.

Diaper rash is caused due to constant wetness. In some kids, diaper rash can occur due to a fungal infection. This type of rash does not require any special treatment ca be handled with over-the-counter medications, like zinc oxide and keeping the area dry and clean. Usually the rash will clear out in a couple of days if this treatment protocol is followed.
