Can Vitamin D Help With Skin Rash ?

Skin rashes are of various kinds and different severity. People use Vitamin D to cure skin rashes caused by diseases, such as scleroderma, vitiligo, psoriasis and lupus. Vitamin D in the form of calcipotreine is directly applied on the skin when it comes to treating psoriasis.

Vitamin D enhances the metabolism of the skin cells and increases their growth. It is effective in treating itchiness and flaking which are some of the common symptoms of a skin problem. Studies indicate that when this vitamin is purchased over the counter, it is not very effective. For treating psoriasis, there should be a direct derivative of the vitamin for it to be effective. And, this derivative is only available through a doctor's prescription.

When it comes to skin rash, most people use steroid creams to alleviate the condition. Not only does the treatment take several weeks, there could be potentially harmful side effects of using steroid creams. However, when it comes to making use of Vitamin D for treating skin rash, luckily there are no associated side effects.

UVB treatments produce Vitamin D and help relieve psoriasis. The vitamin also acts as a very powerful antioxidant. It even helps in preventing premature ageing, and it can cure damaged part of the skin.

Vitamin D works along with calcium. It is a fat soluble component that plays several important roles in maintaining important body functions. Vitamin D is required to build strong bones and regulate the immune system. It also helps in preventing cancer. The body makes the vitamin when the skin is exposed to sunlight and thereafter it is stored in for later use. However, the vitamin is also found in some foods, such as milk, eggs, fatty fish and cod liver oil. You can even get milk and cereals fortified with Vitamin D nowadays.

Vitamin D deficiency in children causes rickets, a disease that gives soft and weak bones. Adults and the elderly who do not get sufficient amounts of this vitamin are at a disadvantage. This happens especially in the northern parts of the US, where there is not too much sunlight. Also, skin color makes a difference. People, who have dark skin, are unable to make sufficient amounts of the vitamin and their risk of Vitamin D deficiency is higher. The absorption of the vitamin is very important for pregnant women and newborn babies.

Researches indicate that low levels of Vitamin D can be linked to several other diseases, such as breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, high blood pressure, obesity and depression. However, at the same time it is important to stress that there is no evidence to prove that too little of the vitamin causes these conditions. The chances of getting them increase when we do not get the right quantity of Vitamin D.
