Scabies is a highly contagious and itchy disease of the skin that is caused by mites. The name of the mite is Sarcoptes scabiei. These mites are almost microscopic and have eight legs. When they come in contact with your skin they burrow into the layers and start laying eggs underneath the skin.
The incubation period for these eggs and the mites is about 1 week. After a week, the mites start coming out of the eggs and they start multiplying in numbers also. However, by this time due to the constant itching you develop a bad red rash.
The itching increases in the night when you are sleeping because the scabies parasites are more active during the nights. They start laying more eggs and keep multiplying. You can also feel the mites move under the skin actually. The mites can crawl all over under your skin. They also migrate to moist and warmer areas of your body.
Scabies spread from direct skin to skin contact with an infected person. It can also spread if the mites were in your clothes and bedding, or it can also spread through stuffed toys. It is a highly contagious disease, and even if you come in contact with another person, that that person can get it.
The symptoms of scabies are excessive itching and a rash immediately. The rash becomes sore after scratching too much. Also, the itching increases in the night and not allowing you to sleep. If you can feel extremely itchy after midnight and the rashes are persistent, then yours should immediately visit the doctor. The doctor will be able to tell if it is scabies. The doctor can prescribe antibiotic creams which are effective in killing these mites under the skin.
