What Is Salmonella ?

In simple words, salmonella is a type of bacteria. However, there are many serotypes of the bacteria, and the one that frequently causes food poisoning in humans is referred to as non-typhoidal salmonella. This bacterium is generally found in the gut of humans as well as other animals, like chickens, cows and reptiles. A person gets the non-typhoidal salmonella infection by ingesting food or water that has been contaminated by feces of infected animals or humans. (See Reference 1)

There is a misconception among people that salmonella can be contracted by just consuming raw or under cooked meats, eggs or poultry. But, vegetables and fruits can contain the bacteria on the surface. Even food handlers who do not practice proper hygiene can be a source of salmonella infection. (See Reference 1)

Many pets can be carriers of salmonella. This is especially true for reptilian pets. They carry the bacteria on their skin and after handling these pets if the person puts their fingers in the mouth, it can cause salmonella infection. Hence, after touching and playing with pets, it is necessary to wash hands properly. (See Reference 1)

The symptoms of salmonella infection are quite similar to stomach flu. They include abdominal cramps, diarrhea and fever. If the infection is severe, the person may also suffer from nausea and vomiting, and pass bloody stools. (See Reference 1) Typically, the symptoms appear within 12 hours to 72 hours after ingesting the contaminated food or water. The symptoms will persist for around 4 days to 7 days and abate without any treatment. However, infants, seniors and immunosuppressed individuals are at the risk of getting complications due to the infection. Should the person suffer from severe diarrhea, it could result in dehydration, which can be fatal if not treated. Also, severe salmonella infection can spread to other parts of the body and require immediate treatment with antibiotics to prevent fatalities. (See Reference 1) As the symptoms of salmonella are akin to those of stomach flu, confirmed diagnosis can only be done after testing a stool sample.

Generally, salmonella infection is not treated. However, to prevent dehydration from diarrhea and vomiting, the person should be given lots of fluids or electrolyte drinks. Generally, sodas and fruit juices are not recommended as the high sugar content in these drinks could worsen the diarrhea. Severe dehydration may require hospitalization and the person will be given fluids intravenously. (See Reference 1) Some people may end up getting Reiter's syndrome, which causes chronic arthritis. (See Reference 1)
