What Is RSV ?

Respiratory syncytial virus causes major problems in young infants and kids. These viruses are prevalent during cold climatic conditions. They can cause very serious as well as fatal infections. It is most common with premature babies as well as infants who are twelve months old or less.

The virus can easily cause fever, cough, wheezing and runny nose. It spreads rapidly and mostly through contact. Any infant or person coming in contact with RSV infected patients can themselves face the same. The treatment is simple and only when matters turn worse you will need to admit the infant in hospital for close supervision.

The major effects of RSV are basically breathing disorders like asthma and bronchitis. Oxygen therapy is definitely one of the solutions for such breathing disorders. The common symptoms can be nasal flaring, excessive congestion, retracting and difficulty in feeding. Most of the times flaring of the nostrils are very common. The infant might face problems like getting choked or might find severe congestion problems. Retracting is nothing but the ribs appear to have a skeletal appearance. Most infants face difficulty in sucking which is a result of heavy breathing. The infant might feel choked and would always cry due to hunger.

At present there is no vaccine to completely cure this but there are injections that can relieve the condition. The best way to protect your infant is by proper hygiene condition. Firstly, making sure the person monitoring the baby washes his or hands thoroughly at every stage. Do not take your baby outside amongst the crowd. Do not keep your baby in close contact with smoke. Most infants over six months need to get flu shot every year. Do cover your mouth every time before sneezing and coughing. Secondly, pump up the immune system of babies by giving them shots of Synagis.
