What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis ?

The human immunity system may for some reason start malfunctioning that is the components of the system responsible for protection of the body from foreign particles may start treating the body’s own elements as toxic, harmful ones and attack them. This kind of disorder of the immunity system is called autoimmune disorders.

Rheumatoid arthritis is one such type of autoimmune disorder where the body immunity system mistakes the joints linings for foreign, harmful particles and thus attacks the zone. This causes inflammation, pain and swelling in the areas.

The symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis show in a sporadic manner. The showing of the symptoms depend on the intensity of the inflammation and also the activeness or inactiveness (the latter state being known as remission) of the pain in the affected areas. If the remission period is not there, symptoms like fatigue, weakness, appetite loss, joint and muscle pain and stiffness, etc start showing in varying degrees.

However, this disease is chronic in nature which means that the disease with its symptoms can lie dormant in the body for months or even years at a stretch. But, this is a dangerous aspect as the nature of the disease is to cause destruction to the joints and the associated tissues and making most parts dysfunctional, even if lying in dormant stage. So at times, the victim will not even realize that their body is decaying slowly from within until, maybe when it is too late.

There are several anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen and Aspirin available in the market which can be taken under the supervision of a medical expert. Also, regular walking and doing exercises targeting the joints also help rheumatoid arthritis patients by making the affected areas stronger.
