Rabies is a viral disease that can be extremely severe. It is invariably fatal. People can get infected by the rabies causing virus if they are bitten by an infected animal. However, you can also get the virus if you are licked by an infected virus and there is an open wound, cut or scrape in the region.
Usually people who are at a high risk of getting the disease are vets, farmers, handlers of animals and exterminators. That is why this high risk group is always advised rabies vaccination to protect them from getting the disease.
On one hand the vaccination protects people, on the other it also has side effects. Some of the most widespread side effects of rabies vaccine are itching at the site of the injection, swelling and/or soreness. As per to the CDC, nearly seventy-four percent people getting a rabies vaccine will have a minimum of one of the symptoms.
Some of the other side effects that are commonly seen are pain in the abdomen, headaches, nausea, pain in the muscles and feeling dizzy. It is estimated that around forty percent of people who get the vaccine show one or more of these side effects.
While the above are the most common and widespread side effects of rabies vaccine. There are also some side effects that are not that common, and these are rigor, having low grade temperature, feeling exhausted, getting hives, suffering from joint pains, and experiencing discomfort all over the body and weakness.
Sometimes, on rare occasions, a person may get side effects that are quite similar to Guillan Barre syndrome. The main symptom here is weakness of the muscles, but the person will recover completely from this.
