Rabies Symptoms In Humans

Rabies is a disease that is caused due to a virus, which can be contracted if you are bitten by an infected animal. Wild as wells as domestic animals can be carriers of the rabies causing virus. While most people think that you can contract rabies only through dogs, getting bitten or licked by cats, horses, sheep, mules and goats can also cause the disease. Wild animals like bats, raccoons, foxes, skunks and rodents are also carriers of the virus.

Usually the virus is present in the saliva of the infected animal, and it gets transmitted when the animal bites, scratches or licks the person. The virus needs a puncture in the skin in order to be transmitted.

In case you are bitten by an animal, you would want to know what are the rabies symptoms in humans. So, without much ado, here are the symptoms of rabies that humans display on being infected by the rabies causing virus.

On entering the body, the virus usually undergoes a period of incubation. This is the time between the virus entering the body and the symptoms becoming apparent. The incubation period can be anything from one week to three months. On rare occasions, this period can also last for up to a year. During this time, the person will not show any symptoms of the disease whatsoever.

Usually the symptoms of rabies that develop early on can be mistaken for some other diseases. These symptoms include coughing, suffering from a sore throat, having a runny nose, fever, very painful headaches, pain in the abdomen, the place where the person was bitten or scratch starts itching, paining, burning or becomes numb, and feeling anxious or restless and this feeling worsens as the days go by.
