Rabies in humans can be prevented if the person seeks medical help the moment he or she is bitten by a wild or domestic animal. If the disease is not treated, it is invariably fatal. However, before succumbing, the person will experience a lot of pain and suffering.

Rabies is caused due to a virus that infects the nervous system. The virus is transmitted through the saliva of an animal, which is already infected. So, biting is the most obvious cause for contracting rabies. However, you can also get rabies if you are scratched by an infected animal.

Some of the symptoms of rabies in humans can be mistaken for other diseases. The initial symptoms include suffering from a sore throat, having fever, losing appetite, headache, nausea, experiencing aches and pains in the muscles and feeling tired and fatigued in general.

If a person has been bitten by a rabies carrying animal, the wound should be immediately washed using warm water and soap. Then the person should be rushed to the hospital. Healthcare providers are equipped to handle cases like these. In the hospital, the bite wound will be cleaned by the hospital staff using a virus killing agent. This will reduce the risk of contracting the disease. However, based on the assessment of the hospital staff, the person will be advised to take a shot of rabies immunoglobulin followed by a rabies vaccination.

The next stage of rabies in humans is marked with hallucinations, delirium and hydrophobia. In addition, the person will face difficulty in speaking, and experience a tingling sensation at the bite site. Also, the person will turn hyperactive, become quite aggressive, suffer from seizures and be sensitive to light, sounds and touch. At this stage, the person will salivate quite a bit and also have tearing. All these symptoms may be accompanied by paralysis. At this stage, it is useless to treat the person as the treatment will be completely ineffective.

The last stage of rabies in humans is having difficulty in breathing, double vision, slipping into a coma and suffering from respiratory failure. The person then succumbs to the disease.
