Pneumonia is taken as a serious disease because it has killed several people compared to other diseases. In the 1930s, it was one of the leading causes of deaths in the US. Until antibiotics were introduced, nearly 1/3rd of the population was affected by pneumonia and died. Even today, in the United States, it is the sixth leading cause of death and 3 million people get it each year. Medical experts have recognized at least 27 signs and symptoms of pneumonia for its early diagnosis. Most of the symptoms are associated with breathing and pain. Some of them even recognize cold and increase in body temperature. If the symptoms are recognized early then the treatment will be more effective.

Pneumonia mainly affects the lungs. It causes breathlessness, and the individual finds it very difficult to breathe. Shortness of breath is an indicator of pneumonia. In pneumonia, the fluid retention causes blockade in the airways making it difficult to breathe in air into the lungs. This infection increases the respiratory rate.

When a person coughs, they bring up greenish yellow colored mucus and it is far more dangerous when this occurs. Sometimes the patient will cough up blood in their sputum. Along with these some experience chest pain. Cyanosis is one of the symptoms where the lips and tips of the fingers turn blue because of the lack of oxygen supply.

Pneumonia also causes muscle and headaches. Doctors use these as an indicator for identifying the disease when the other symptoms are present. Fever along with chills and cough at various degrees can help to determine the stage of pneumonia. Even tiredness and drowsiness are common symptoms.  The primary symptoms are always accompanies with these secondary symptoms.

Pneumonia can be caused due to bacteria, fungus or a virus. Even parasites are known to cause it. One of the most dangerous forms of the disease is hospital pneumonia. If you are in a hospital for some other ailment and you get pneumonia by catching the infection from another patient, it becomes worse. A person in a hospital is in a compromised health state and pneumonia attacks weaker bodies lethally. The symptom for hospital pneumonia is same as pneumonia. The people who are at risk are small children and the elderly who have a poor immune system.
