While adults too can get pink eye, this is a common infection among children. Basically the sclera of the eye turns red due to an infection. The infection can be caused by a bacterium or a virus. A person can also get pink eye due to allergies, but this type is not contagious to others.
In majority of cases of pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, it has been seen that bacterial infection is the main cause. Besides reddening of the sclera and eyelids, the infected eye gets inflamed, it starts itching, feels gritty and also there is a discharge from the eye that is yellowish or greenish in color.
Usually bacterial pink eye is treated by means of antibiotic eye drops or ointment. In addition, if the swelling and inflammation is severe, the doctor will prescribe some other medication to alleviate these symptoms. Warm compress also helps to relieve the swelling and getting rid of crusting and discharge. The infected eye should not be touched or rubbed as it will make the irritation worse and also lead to the other eye getting infection. However, in most cases, both eyes tend to get infected when it comes to bacterial pink eye.
The bacteria that pink eye is most H. influenzae and S. pneumoniae. The H. influenzae bacterium is also known to cause an infection in the ears while causing pink eye. These two bacteria can be easily treated using antibiotic eye drops like Tobramycin, Gentamycin and Sulfonamides. Today, newer antibiotics are available that seem to work much better on these bacteria that result in pink eye.
