Pink eye is medically known as conjunctivitis. In this infection, the conjunctiva, which is membrane lining the eyeball and the eyelids gets infected or gets inflamed. Anyone can get pink eye, but the infection is most commonly seen among children.

The symptoms of pink eye can vary a little bit from one person to the next depending on what caused the infection. A person can get pink eye due to a bacterial infection, viral infection, an allergy. The bacterial infection is responsible for most of the cases, and it is caused due to bacteria like staphylococci or streptococci bacteria. This infection is very contagious and needs to be treated at once.

If a person has a viral infection like the common cold, flu, infection of the respiratory tract or infection of the sinuses, it could reach the eye leading to viral pink eye. Here there is no treatment, and the infection would have to run its course.

Pink eye caused due to allergies invariably occurs due to allergens like dust mites, smoke, paints, pollution, or cleaning products used at home. This type of pink eye is not contagious and the inflammation disappears once the source of the allergy is removed.

Some of the most common symptoms of pink eye are as follows:

• The infection is called pink eye for a reason. The infected eye gets a pink or reddish color. The infection can affect just one eye or both eyes.
• The person will experience pain, which invariably gets worse as the eye feels irritated and the person keeps touching it.
• The eyelids of the infected eye get swollen as a result of constant watering of the eye.
• In addition, the person will experience itching and burning sensation in the infected eye. The eye will feel gritty as though there is a foreign particle stuck in the eye.
• The infected eye will be sensitive to light.
• There will be a discharge from the infected eye. In case of a bacterial infection, the discharge will be yellow or green in color while viral infection or allergy will cause a white color discharge. Sometimes, the eyelids can get stuck together due to the discharge. This is most commonly seen in the mornings, at the time of waking up.
