How Do You Catch Pink Eye ?

Pink eye is another name for conjunctivitis. Some of the most common symptoms of pink eye are itching, pain, burning sensation, irritation of the infected eye, being sensitive to light, watering and swelling of the eye and eyelid. Of course, the infected eye will be red in color.

You might be wondering how does a person catch pink eye. There are several ways in which this can happen. Pink eye can be caused due to a bacterial infection, viral infection or allergies like hay fever. When the infection is caused due to a bacterium or virus, it is extremely contagious, and can be transmitted to an uninfected person in no time. However, when conjunctivitis is caused due to an allergy, it disappears once the allergen is removed.

You can also get pink eye due to a chemical splash. This is quite dangerous to the eye and should be immediately checked by a doctor, or you could lose your vision.

The virus or the bacterium is present in the discharge that comes out from the eye. Also, they are airborne when the infected person coughs or sneezes. So, using the same towel as the infected person, or touching the surfaces or objects touched by an infected person can easily spread the infection. The infected person should avoid touching or rubbing his or her eye, and also wash their hands frequently using soap and warm water. This will control the spread of the infection. All surfaces touched by the infected person should be cleaned with a disinfectant or anti-bacterial wipes.
