Another name for pink eye is conjunctivitis. It is an infection that can be brought on due to a viral or bacterial infection, or due to allergies. The infection due to allergies is not contagious, but the other types are highly contagious. The eyeballs and the eyelids get red and inflamed when a person has this infection.
While pink eye can cause a lot of discomfort depending on the severity of the infection, you can also use certain home cures for pink eye to help reduce the symptoms and cure the infection.
One of the most common home cures for pink eye is using salt water to rinse out the eyes. Here you will have to boil the water and then allow it to cool. When the water turns lukewarm, add some salt to it. Dissolve the salt and then let the water cool down completely. Then soak some balls of cotton in the water and place them on closed eyes for around five minutes. This might sting a bit when the salt enters your eye, but it is a good sign as the infection is being tackled.
In order to alleviate the symptoms of pink eye, you can also use tea bags. Steep the tea bags into water for few minutes. Then take some clean tissue, dip on end into the brewed tea and puts some drops into the eye that is infected. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap before. You can also add honey to the brewed tea; in which case the water should be warm to dissolve the honey.
If you do not want to put drops of tea into your eye, you can also place the tea bags on your eyes for around 2 minutes. This should be done for 2 days to see any effect.
