Medically pink eye is known as conjunctivitis. It is a highly contagious infection of the eye. People who suffer from pink eye can easily pass it on to others. Nearly fifty percent of the cases of pink are bacterial in nature, while twenty percent are caused due to viral infection. Remaining is brought on by foreign particles or trauma.

You must be wondering what is the contagious period for pink eye. The infection is contagious and can be spread to others as long as the eyes are watering, having a discharge or as the eyelashes get matted and stuck together. Usually the contagious period for pink eye is around three days to seven days. Once the aforementioned symptoms abate and cease completely, the person is not contagious any more and can go back to work or school.

In case the person is putting antibiotics into his or her eyes, then they should wait for a minimum of twenty-four hours after starting the treatment before they decide to return to work or school.

The infected person should make sure that he or she washes their hands often, and should make an effort not to touch the infected eye whatsoever. Also, the person should have his own towel and anything touched by the person should be disinfected. This is the only way to prevent the infection spreading in a family. Both viral pink eye and bacterial pink eye are extremely contagious, but the infection caused to allergies is not. Pink eye brought on by allergies will get okay once the allergen is done away with, or the person takes an antihistamine.
