What Is Pertussis ?

Pertussis is most commonly known as the whooping cough and is known to be caused by the bacteria known as the Bordatella pertussis. This germ is known to live within the nose, throat and mouth of human beings. It is highly infectious and spread very easily from one person to another.

The bacteria are basically shed in the discharges that usually come out of the throat and nose. This, then, spreads to other people through sneezing or coughing. A person suffering from this infection is contagious right from the onset of such symptoms till another three weeks though the time period can be shortened with the help of various antibiotics that are recommended by people. It can thus be reduced to even five days.

In spite of the availability of effective vaccination, this infection is still highly prevalent in the US among almost all age groups. A person who has already suffered from this sort of ailment and has not taken vaccination is likely to suffer from the same all over again. Immunity provided by these vaccination is not life-long and can thus precaution is the keyword.

There are certain very common symptoms that can help people detect the presence of this infection such as runny nose, low or mild fever, sneezing, and occasional cough. The cough becomes severe gradually and after a certain time period it may turn really harmful if not treated at the right time. Though the infection recovers using the treatment options, it can lead to various complications as well.
