Cognitive Therapy And Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive compulsive disorder, or OCD, is a psychological term or a disorder caused by certain issues that might have occurred as a result of childhood stress. Cognitive or talk therapy is the only way to calm OCD. This was most commonly observed as a spiritual problem in the age old middle century.

At present, this disorder is viewed as a neurological disorder often caused by some kind of chemical imbalance. It can surely be calmed down by treatment. Firstly, you need to make sure you take the sufferer to a psychologist who practices and follows cognitive therapy. Mostly, all of them do practice and all types of talking therapy can be regarded as cognitive. However, most often there are very few psychologists who would practice cognitive therapy for OCD. The first thing that they would say is to tie a rubber band around the wrist and the moment you feel an obsessive thought, you just need to nap the rubber so hard that it stings. This will act as a warning sign and would creep off the obsessive thought. You will know to have a control on it.

Secondly, keep practicing avoidance to compulsions. Refuse to do some work or behavior once or twice. This will take some time but you will be able to avoid any kind of anxiety.

Thirdly, each time you try these out, make sure you have a friend besides you who will help you in some way. Nothing bad is going to happen in case you do not perform any obsession. Have a total control over your anxieties. Share most of your worries with the psychologist who can then help to bring new ways to have a control over all of them. Once you do it in open, you will yourself see the actions and its consequences which you will be able to control.
