Vitamin C And Obesity

According to a recent study, there is a correlation between Vitamin C and obesity. If the body has low levels of Vitamin C in the blood, then there seems to be an increased chance of the person being fat and having accumulation of fat around the belly.

As per some researchers from the Arizona State University, the quantity of Vitamin C present in the blood is directly connected to the oxidation of fat in the body. In other words, the amount of fat that is converted to energy is dependent on the amount of the vitamin present in the bloodstream. This is true both while exercising and at rest.

The study had twenty participants, men and women, who were obese. They were randomly divided into 2 groups -- one to take 500mg of the vitamin per day, and the other was given a placebo. The study took place over a period of 4 weeks during which the participants had to consume low fat diet. The diet was adjusted by the researchers in such a way that the participants lost weight slowly -- around two pounds a week.

When the study started, the participants who had the lowest level of Vitamin C in their body were the ones who were the most obese. However, as the study progressed, the ones who were taking Vitamin C on a daily basis could oxidize fat, and there was around eleven percent reduction in body fat.

However, neither the control group nor the group taking Vitamin C lost weight significantly, but the group taking the vitamin lost more weight compared to the control group. The study pointed out that having low levels of Vitamin C in the bloodstream did not hinder losing weight in the short term. But in the long term, it will have a significant effect in weight loss because the vitamin is used by the body to produce carnitine, and when there is a low level of carnitine in the tissues, fat tends to gather in those tissues.
