How Does Obesity Affect Asthma ?

Obesity is a rapidly increasing deadly disease paralyzing the majority of populations worldwide. While every body by now knows that obesity leads to heart diseases, type 2 diabetes and certain type of cancers. There are evidences which suggest that obesity contributes to the development of asthma. An exact reason has not been discovered yet, but studies have pointed out that about 75 percent of asthma emergency cases are obese people.

Obesity affects the structure of the lungs and the airways. Obese people have an increased mass of the abdomen and the chest wall. This results in narrowing the airways diameter. One more option is that obese people tend to breathe at greater rates, but they breathe significantly lesser tidal volumes as compared to people who are not obese. As a consequence, the bronchodilatory outcome of tidal pull is weakened, and the obese person is tends to bend towards elevated increased airway responsiveness.

Obesity is considered to affect the structure of the lungs and the airways. Children who are obese have a poor development of lungs which results in smaller size of lungs and reduced functions of the lungs. When one reduces weight, there can be some improvement in the functions of the lungs, but the airway responsiveness is not affected.

An increased inflammation is another reason to asthma. Presence of circulating leukocytes, cytokines, cytokine receptors, and chemokines triggers inflammation. Inflammation appears in the adipose tissue. It contains leptin, and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 which comprehensively adds to airway hyper responsiveness.

To sum it up obesity is said to have direct link with asthma. In children, who are obese, persistence of asthma cannot be overruled.
