Obesity is a major concern worldwide and has out broken almost similar to an epidemic globally. Obesity is one of the prevalent chronic diseases which has affected almost half of the entire world's population. Obesity is the major cause of certain chronic diseases like type-2 diabetes, heart diseases, colon cancer, increased blood pressure and strokes.
A person is considered obese when his body mass index passes the threshold level of 30 kg/m2. The foremost reason for obesity is consuming food rich in sugar, carbohydrates and fat, eating less amounts of vitamins and minerals. This is also accompanied with a sedentary life style.
Obesity has practically taken over all ages, including small children. It is a critical condition, which has grave social and psychological implications. Better living standards, higher income groups and technology are the factors giving rise to sedentary lifestyle. Obesity is more common in developing countries where under nourished and over nourished exist simultaneously.
One of the special concerns about obesity is its rising trend among children. A survey has revealed that there are almost 20 million obese children worldwide. The figures for childhood obesity have doubled since the 1980s, and adolescence obesity has increased three times. It is creeping almost like an epidemic which is not only restricted to developed nations, but affecting the developing countries also. Obesity is prevalent in North America, the UK, the Middle East, the Pacific Islands, Eastern Europe, Australia, and some parts of Asia, including China. Several developed countries are spending around two to six percent of the overall health related costs on obesity linked problems.
