Obesity which once regarded as an icon of prosperity and fecundity in the times gone by has become a social stigma in the present civilization. Obesity is actually a measure of body mass index, also referred to as BMI. It is calculated by measuring weight and height of a person and then seeing whether they are compatible.
If the BMI is between 25 kilograms per square meters and 30 kilograms per square meters, the person is considered overweight. And, if the measure crosses 30 kg/m2, the person is considered as obese. Obesity results due to accumulation of excess body fat. People, who tend to eat more and exercise less, are prone to becoming obese.
The possibilities of getting certain life threatening diseases are eminent in people who are in the obesity category. Obesity is not only found in adults, but also among children. Children, who are obese, also have high chances of getting similar kinds of diseases like adults.
Causes of obesity are basically accumulation of unwanted calories accompanied by minimal physical activity. In some cases genes can be a factor. In some rare cases disorders of endocrine glands, medications and psychiatric illness could be a reason.
The primary treatment for obesity is diet restrictions and following a rigorous exercise regime. Many reduce body fat by adhering to these guidelines, but at times when fats do not go away easily, the person can be administered fat reduction medicines. These are although not advisable and should be taken under a doctor's supervision only. In extreme cases, the person may undergo bypass gastric surgery, which helps in reducing the quantity of food that the person can stomach in one go. However, this too has its side effects, and the same should be discussed thoroughly with the doctor before opting for such a surgery.
