By and large society relates obesity to adulthood never realizing that it is gradually creeping in the childhood too. The reason for this is quite obvious and many of us are even aware of it, but do not seem to bother much until its deadly symptoms become prevalent in our children.
Few studies have revealed that obesity amongst children has almost doubled in past few decades. Obesity in childhood leads to many serious disorders, and the most prevalent is diabetes Type 2. Elevated levels of cholesterol make them susceptible to heart disease and hypertension. Children who are obese also run the risk of having asthma, bone disorders and liver malfunctions.
Obese children experience sleeping problems because of breathing troubles during sleep, often referred to as sleep apnea. Obesity does not go away with the child entering adolescence, but in fact about 70 percent of them remain overweight when they reach adolescence.
Obesity is a disease. This is something that needs to be accepted first. So, parents must realize that they should not corner the children. On the other hand, they must support them emotionally because as such they know they are overweight, and if treated discretely, it may affect them psychologically.
Parents have to first check their habits and lifestyle because the children ultimately learn maximum from home. They tend to adopt what they see. Prepare a timetable for children which has a balance of all kind of recreational activities. Spending long hours in front of the television or computer should be avoided at the first instance. Involving children in daily activities like buying at the grocery shop and vegetable markets helps them to learn the nutrient values of each food item, and they become gradually aware of what to eat and what to avoid. Once children learn to maintain a good diet and habit they turn out to be healthy individuals.
