Also, researchers are trying to find easy and better methods through which doctors can diagnose the disorder and effectively treat it. By studying narcoleptics and their families, researchers are trying to under what causes the disorder, what course it follows and how to treat it better. Because of the research on the disorder, researchers have discovered that some families of dogs have narcolepsy, which occurs naturally. This discovery has been of great help to the scientists who are also looking at the hereditary angle.

Through research, scientists are looking to understand the mechanisms of sleep better and what effects sleep deprivation has on the person physically as well as psychologically. Also, the scientists are trying to develop improved methods of measuring cataplexy and sleepiness.

Due to research in narcolepsy, scientists have found out that narcolepsy can manifest itself during childhood. If this should happen, then the child can develop behavioral disorders.
